They may have all the pull of pop culture’s most magnetic teenage boys. But make no mistake: There is nothing childish about the Jonas Brothers.
At Sunday’s sold-out gig, Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas showed off a musical and vocal maturity they rarely get credit for. Sure, the screaming was abundant. And yes, the tickets to the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre show were fetching Hannah Montana-like prices.
But whatever the reasons for the hype, these guys transcended it with a set that lasted nearly two hours, even on what was a school night for most of the teens and tweeners there. Packed mostly with rockers and anthems, such as openers “That’s Just the Way We Roll,” “BB Good” and encore “S.O.S.,” the brothers confirmed there was true talent on that stage. Not just within the trio, but with their rich backing band, complete with six violins and two cellos.
And about halfway into the show, the Jonases had time to show Chicago that they are more than just skinny jeans and shaggy hair. Nick sang and played “A Little Bit Longer” alone on the grand piano. And for “Gotta Find You,” the three came out to the end of the catwalk and Joe belted the song over Nick and Kevin’s sparse acoustic guitar work. A cover of Shania Twain’s “I’m Gonna Getcha Good” was the only twist that didn’t quite fit, but from the way the crowd reacted, Joe’s vocals would’ve been strong enough to cover any artist in any genre.
